Salaried GP

Role

This remote practice is looking for a long or short term GP to join their team providing cradle to grave primary health care.  You will be working in tandem with another permanent full time GP time. You will be working three days per week and on call every second weekend, each GP is on-call 1:2, with call-outs usually infrequent due to the low population on the island. It is a 35 minute helicopter ride for emergency casualties to the nearest hospital, Auckland. You will be resourceful with a broad skill base including emergency experience, and have the ability to work within a great multidisciplinary team comprising rural nurse specialists, rural nurses, a health improvement practitioner, a health coach, an awhi ora, and administration.

Relocation assistance can be negotiated and for your first three months you can expect free housing. Thereafter the practice offers you subsided housing, either a 2 or a 3 bedroom fully-furnished house. The practice will also provide a work 4WD vehicle.

Practice

The modern health centre, in the centre of the island, has three consulting rooms and two nurses’ stations. The practice is well-equipped, including a short-stay room, limb x-ray capability, point of care access and minor surgery services available on-site.  A ‘nurses’ cottage’ clinic lies an hour away at the north end of the island which the rural nurse specialists staff 24/7.

Location

Great Barrier Island is a 30-minute flight east of Auckland (or a 5 hour barge ride), where you can have your own slice of heaven in this picturesque setting.  It’s a popular island with forest ranges, white beaches and flourishing plant and bird life. With a population of less than 1200 people, the community is tight knit and everyone looks out for each other. There’s everything you need from grocery stores, pharmacy, library, churches and an amazing recycling centre.  Children are catered for with a Play Centre and three primary schools. High school brings the options of either correspondence or excellent boarding schools off-island.  The island life brings a host of activities including surfing, snorkelling, fishing, walking in native forests and horse trekking to name a few!

Every year the Great FitzRoy Mussel Fest celebrates the local mouth-watering delicacy, the Great Barrier Garden Tour exhibits the island’s beautiful residential gardens and for those who like to keep active there’s the Golf Club, the Sports Club with tennis and netball courts and regular touch games.
